A weather guide for resort owners, hospitality operators, and anyone planning to use a yurt house.
A resort room in Cherrapunji faces a different day from one in Tulsa or western India. Yet a TOF yurt cabin can be planned for all weather settings — the answer lies in how its roof, fabric, frame, insulation, and site preparation work together.
Here's what each season means for a The Out Factory yurt , and what to consider when planning one for your location.
Can a yurt handle heavy rain?
Tested in Cherrapunji, India — one of the wettest places on earth.
Yes. The yurt's conical roof helps rainwater run down instead of collecting on a flat surface. Its waterproof outer fabric forms the weather-facing layer, while the dome closes to keep the interior protected. The Out Factory uses Serge Ferrari fabric with a protective finish designed for long-term outdoor use — see the materials in our yurt specifications.
Where the water goes next matters just as much. The platform the yurt sits on needs suitable drainage around it, particularly on a slope or at a site that receives prolonged monsoon rain. That preparation is planned for the location rather than assumed to be the same everywhere.
Guests will hear rain on the roof. The insulation softens some of the sound, but it doesn't silence it — and for many guests, listening to the rain is part of the stay.
Can a yurt handle snow?
Rated for up to 5 feet of snow load.
Yes. The same sloping roof helps snow move off the yurt cabin. The frame supports the roof, and insulation helps manage heat transfer, making the interior easier to warm.
Snow still needs to be considered in the site plan. The weight it places on a structure depends on the conditions, so a snow location calls for planning around its local requirements. Heating and protection for site-installed plumbing also belong in that plan.
Guests may be able to watch snowfall through the dome. Any snow collecting on the roof, however, needs to be assessed from outside as part of the property's winter checks.
Can a yurt withstand strong wind?
Rated for wind speeds of up to 280 km/h.
Yes — The Out Factory's yurt cabins are rated for wind resistance of up to 280 km/h. A round wall presents no broad, flat face to the wind. That shape is one part of the response; the wooden frame, tension cable, hardware, and anchoring work together with it.
For an exposed coastal plot or hilltop, the platform and anchoring are planned as part of the installation. A sheltered site may face very different conditions, even if the yurt cabins looks the same.
Can a yurt stay cool in summer?
Rated to handle heat up to 45°C.
Yes, with the right setup. The outer fabric filters UVB rays, while the insulation helps reduce heat transfer through the roof and walls. The dome can open to release warm air that gathers high inside the yurt cabin. Paired with openable windows, it creates a path for air to move through the space.
Comfort also depends on the location, shade, airflow, and how the room is used. On a fiercely hot or humid day, a fan or AC may still be needed to meet guests' expectations. The dome and insulation help manage heat — they're not a promise that every yurt will stay cool without them.
What makes a yurt work through every season?
Weather performance comes from the complete setup, not any one feature alone. The yurt cabin brings its roof shape, fabric, frame, insulation, and openings. Its site needs a suitable platform, drainage, and anchoring. Heating or cooling is then chosen for the climate and the experience you want guests to have.
That's why we look at where your yurt cabin will stand and how you plan to use it before finalising its configuration. A room intended for a rainy hillside, a hot retreat, or a snowy getaway should be planned with that setting in mind.
A yurt cabin lets guests feel close to the season outside — watching a storm through the window, hearing rain on the roof, or seeing snow through the dome — while giving them a considered space to stay in.
