A simple routine for keeping your The Out Factory yurt cabin clean, comfortable, and looking its best.
A yurt spends every day outdoors, so it's natural to wonder how much work it takes to maintain one. The answer is reassuringly simple: dust and wipe the inside, wash the exterior when dirt builds up, and give the small amount of exposed wood an occasional refresh.
There's no single cleaning calendar for every yurt cabin. One beside a dusty road may need attention more often than one in a forest or beach. Use the routine below as a guide, then adjust it to your site.
How do you clean the inside of a yurt cabin?
Dust as part of regular housekeeping; wipe marks as they appear.
For day-to-day care, dust the visible wooden frame with a soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner's soft-brush attachment. Pay attention to places where dust settles, such as the rafters and around door and window frames.
The inner fabric has an easy-clean finish. Wipe everyday marks promptly with a soft, damp cloth, then let the area dry. There's no need to scrub the fabric or soak it. Avoid abrasive pads, bleach, and harsh cleaning chemicals.
Clean the windows as part of your usual housekeeping. If the yurt cabin is used for guest stays, these small tasks can fit into the regular room-cleaning routine.
In humid weather, let fresh air circulate when conditions allow, and wipe away any condensation you notice around windows or other interior surfaces. This also helps protect furniture and finishes inside.
How often should you wash the outside of a yurt cabin?
Pressure wash every 15–30 days at a dusty site — less often at a cleaner one.
The outer fabric is designed for outdoor use and has a dirt-resistant, easy-clean finish. The fabric resists fading in the sun and won't grow mould, even outdoors. These features make care easier, but they don't mean dirt should be left to accumulate indefinitely. Read more about the fabric.
Start with a visual check. Remove loose leaves and debris where they can be reached safely. Then pressure wash using a gentle spray, taking care around fabric joins, the dome, doors, and windows — stronger pressure is not a substitute for the right technique. For a stubborn stain, use a cleaner recommended for the fabric rather than a household solvent or abrasive product. Serge Ferrari's cleaning guidance recommends soft cleaning tools and a clean-water rinse.
How often depends on your site. At a particularly dusty location, that could mean a pressure wash every 15–30 days. At a cleaner site, once every few months may be enough — let visible dirt buildup guide the schedule rather than a fixed calendar.
How often should you check the exposed wood on a yurt cabin?
Once a year — more often at harshly exposed sites.
Very little wood is exposed to the weather on a yurt cabin, mainly around the doors and windows. It's treated and oiled, as described in our yurt specifications. Over time, strong sun, heavy rain, or other extreme conditions may slightly wear the surface finish.
Check the exposed wood once a year. If the finish looks weathered, clean and dry the surface, lightly sand it, and re-oil it with a compatible product. In a harshly exposed location, this may be an annual job; in a more sheltered spot, every one or two years may be enough. Let the condition of the finish guide you.
How do you maintain the dome and overhangs?
Check the dome mechanism yearly; clear roof debris after storms or leaf-fall.
As part of your yearly check, open and close the dome to make sure its mechanism moves smoothly. If it sticks, leaks, or seems loose, don't force it — contact The Out Factory for guidance.
Keep visible debris from collecting on the roof and overhangs, especially after heavy winds or a season of falling leaves. Arrange appropriate help for anything you cannot reach safely from the ground.
What maintenance isn't covered by the yurt cabin itself?
The platform, flooring, plumbing, electrical work, and interiors are prepared locally. Their care depends on the materials you chose and your contractor's instructions. Keep the area around the platform clear, and watch for standing water, drainage problems, or wear to the flooring.
